I’m excited to share that I’m now a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)—a huge milestone that represents both experience and continued professional growth in my editing career.

Membership in the CIEP isn’t automatic, and it's not easy. Editors must demonstrate proven work history, training, and professional standards before being accepted at the Professional level. That means authors working with a CIEP Professional Member can feel confident they’re hiring someone who meets recognized industry benchmarks for editing and proofreading.

What Is the CIEP... and Why Does It Matter?

The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading is one of the leading professional organizations for editors in the UK and internationally. It exists to promote high editorial standards, ongoing professional development, and ethical editing practices.

For writers seeking professional editing services, working with a Professional CIEP member means:

  • Your editor follows established professional guidelines

  • They pursue ongoing training in editing best practices

  • Their experience has been independently evaluated

  • They are committed to quality, clarity, and accuracy in manuscripts

In short, it’s one more layer of assurance that your manuscript is in capable hands.

What It Takes to Become a Professional Member

To qualify for Professional membership, I had to demonstrate that I meet the Institute’s requirements, including:

  • At least 500 hours of editing or proofreading experience, supported by references from a traditional publisher

  • Substantial professional training, including completion of core editing coursework

  • Evidence of continued professional development as an editor

This process ensures that Professional Members aren’t just calling themselves editors; they’ve proven their skills, training, and dedication to the craft.

Why This Benefits YOU

For authors who work with me, this membership reinforces what I aim to provide in every project:

  • Careful, professional editing grounded in industry standards

  • Ongoing training and professional development

  • A commitment to helping your writing read clearly, smoothly, and professionally

My goal is always to help your manuscript reach its strongest possible version, and becoming a Professional Member of the CIEP is one more step toward that mission!

Looking Ahead

Achieving this milestone earlier than I expected makes me excited for what’s next in 2026. I’ll continue investing in training, resources, and tools that help me better serve authors at every stage of the editing process.

If you’re preparing a manuscript and want to learn more about how professional editing can help, feel free to reach out or request a sample edit.
